General Motors Canada operates a major assembly plant in the city, which has been a key employer in the region for over a century. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), located in Oshawa, is a leading institution for research and innovation in fields such as engineering, business, and health sciences.
Culturally, the Oshawa metro area is home to a vibrant arts and entertainment scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and cultural events throughout the year. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, located in downtown Oshawa, showcases Canadian and contemporary art collections, and hosts regular exhibitions and events. The Regent Theatre in downtown Oshawa is a historic landmark that offers live performances, concerts, and film screenings.
In terms of sports, Oshawa is best known for its hockey team, the Oshawa Generals, which competes in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The Generals have a storied history and have produced numerous NHL players over the years.
