The region is situated on the shores of the St. Marys River, which serves as a vital waterway connecting the Great Lakes. Economically, Sault Ste. Marie is historically known for its strong ties to the steel and manufacturing industries. Algoma Steel, one of Canada’s largest steel producers, has been a major employer in the region for over a century. Additionally, the area is home to a diverse range of industries, including forestry, tourism, healthcare, and education. Other major employers in the region include the Essar Group, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and various government agencies.
The Sault Ste. Marie metro area boasts a rich cultural scene, with a strong emphasis on arts, heritage, and community events. The city is home to several museums, art galleries, and cultural centers, including the Art Gallery of Algoma and the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, which showcase the region’s history and artistic talent. The Algoma Fall Festival, held annually, celebrates the arts through performances, exhibitions, and workshops.
In terms of sports, Sault Ste. Marie is passionate about hockey, with the Soo Greyhounds junior ice hockey team representing the city in the Ontario Hockey League. The community also enjoys a variety of recreational sports, including soccer, baseball, and curling. The city’s sports facilities, such as the Essar Centre and John Rhodes Community Centre, host a range of sporting events and tournaments throughout the year.
Major attractions in the Sault Ste. Marie area include the Sault Canal National Historic Site, which features a series of locks and interpretive exhibits highlighting the region’s maritime history. The Agawa Canyon Tour Train offers scenic railway excursions through the rugged wilderness of Algoma Country, showcasing breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders. Other popular destinations include the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site, and the nearby scenic parks and conservation areas.
