Bakersfield, the central city of the metro area, is a hub for business and culture in the region. Delano, to the north, contributes with its agricultural focus, while Ridgecrest and Tehachapi, located in more mountainous regions, add to the area’s geographic and economic diversity.
The geography of the Bakersfield CA metro area is characterized by its valley location, surrounded by mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada to the east and the Tehachapi Mountains to the south. The Kern River, a critical water source for the region, flows through Bakersfield, adding to the area’s natural beauty.
Economically, the area is a powerhouse in the agriculture and energy sectors. It is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country, with significant outputs in crops like grapes, citrus, and almonds. The energy sector, particularly oil and natural gas, is another major contributor to the local economy, with Bakersfield being one of the most productive oil-producing areas in the nation. These industries, along with healthcare and education, are major employers in the region.
Education in the area is centered around California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), and Bakersfield College. CSUB offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs and is known for its strong business, nursing, and engineering departments. Bakersfield College, a community college, provides vocational training and associate degrees, playing a vital role in workforce development.
Culturally, the area has a rich history and a unique cultural scene. The area is famous for the “Bakersfield Sound,” a genre of country music popularized by artists like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. The Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace is a major venue for live music and a museum dedicated to the Bakersfield Sound. The metro area also hosts several cultural festivals and events throughout the year, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of its residents.
Sports in the area include minor league teams like the Bakersfield Condors (hockey) and the Bakersfield Train Robbers (baseball). College sports, particularly at CSUB, also attract a following, with the university’s basketball and baseball teams being particularly popular.
Major attractions in the Bakersfield CA metro area include the Kern County Museum, which offers insights into the region’s history and cultural heritage. The California Living Museum (CALM) is a unique zoo and garden that focuses on native California wildlife and plant species. The nearby Sequoia National Forest and the Kern River provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, camping, and river rafting.
