The Chico metro area, situated in Northern California, covers approximately 1,100 square miles and is home to a population of around 220,000 residents. Anchored by the city of Chico, this region boasts a diverse economy, rich cultural heritage, and abundant recreational opportunities.
Geographically, the Chico metro area is nestled in the fertile Sacramento Valley, surrounded by the Sierra Nevada foothills to the east and the Coast Range mountains to the west. The area is characterized by its lush agricultural landscapes, including orchards, vineyards, and fields of rice and almonds. The Sacramento River, which runs through the valley, provides irrigation and scenic beauty.
The economy of the Chico metro area is driven by a mix of industries, with agriculture playing a significant role. Major crops grown in the region include almonds, walnuts, rice, and olives. Chico is also home to several manufacturing companies, including those producing food products, medical devices, and technology equipment. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, one of the largest craft breweries in the United States, is headquartered in Chico and is a major employer in the area.
Chico is also known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and music venues scattered throughout the city. The historic downtown area is home to eclectic shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as the iconic Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, which offers guided tours of the former home of John and Annie Bidwell, early pioneers of California.
In higher education, Chico State University is a prominent institution within the Chico metro area. Known for its strong programs in agriculture, business, and environmental science, Chico State attracts students from across the state and beyond. The university’s beautiful campus is situated along the banks of Big Chico Creek and features a mix of historic and modern buildings.
In sports, Chico State University’s athletic teams, known as the Wildcats, compete in NCAA Division II as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The university’s baseball and softball teams have achieved notable success at the national level.
Other major attractions in the Chico metro area include Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the United States, offering miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming holes, and picnic areas. Lake Oroville, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, provides opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping.
