Major employers include Essentia Health and St. Luke’s Hospital, both significant contributors to the healthcare industry, and the University of Minnesota Duluth, playing a crucial role in education and research. The area’s economy also benefits from the tourism industry, driven by attractions related to the natural environment and cultural heritage.
Education in the area is anchored by the University of Minnesota Duluth, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The College of St. Scholastica and Lake Superior College also contribute to higher education and workforce development, providing a variety of academic and vocational options.
Culturally, the area boasts a vibrant arts and entertainment scene. The area celebrates its diverse community through numerous festivals, including the Duluth Superior Film Festival and the Bayfront Blues Festival. Sports in the area include a variety of collegiate athletics, with the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs competing in NCAA Division II sports, except for men’s and women’s ice hockey, which compete in Division I.
