The city is home to several major employers, including the JBS USA beef processing plant, which is one of the largest employers in the region. The Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer showcases the history and culture of the Great Plains region through exhibits, artifacts, and historic buildings. The Heartland Events Center hosts concerts, trade shows, and sporting events throughout the year, while the Nebraska State Fairgrounds is home to the annual Nebraska State Fair, a celebration of agriculture, entertainment, and community.
In sports, the Grand Island metro area is home to the Grand Island Senior High Islanders, who compete in a variety of high school sports as part of the Nebraska School Activities Association. Major attractions in the Grand Island metro area include the Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center, which offers guided tours of the Platte River Valley and opportunities to view the annual sandhill crane migration. Island Oasis Water Park provides family-friendly fun with water slides, pools, and other aquatic attractions, while the Stolley Park Railroad offers scenic train rides through Stolley Park.
