The Hattiesburg MS metro area, known as the Hub City, is a vibrant economic and cultural center in southeastern Mississippi. Geographically, Hattiesburg lies at a strategic crossroads that has historically served as a hub for railway systems, contributing to its nickname and economic growth. The area’s geography features a mix of pine forests and gently rolling hills, offering a natural setting for outdoor recreation and scenic beauty. The Leaf and Bouie Rivers enhance the region’s landscape, providing opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and riverside activities.
The economy of Hattiesburg is diversified, with a strong emphasis on education, healthcare, and retail. Major employers include the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and Forrest General Hospital, both of which are pivotal to the area’s economic stability and growth. USM not only offers employment but also drives innovation and development through research and technology transfer. The retail sector is robust, with the Turtle Creek Mall serving as a regional shopping destination that supports local and national businesses.
Education forms the backbone of the Hattiesburg metro area, with the University of Southern Mississippi offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Known for its programs in the arts, business, and health sciences, USM contributes significantly to the cultural and intellectual life of the community. William Carey University also plays an important role, offering education in the fields of medicine, business, and education, and contributing to the area’s development.

The Longleaf Trace, a 44-mile multi-use trail running from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, provides excellent opportunities for biking, walking, and equestrian activities. The African American Military History Museum, located in the historic USO Club, offers insights into the contributions of African American servicemen and women through the decades.
