Economically, the area has a diverse economy with strong ties to the oil and gas industry, healthcare, and education. Major employers include oilfield service companies, Lafayette General Health, and Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. The area also has a growing technology sector, with efforts to diversify the economy in light of changes in the energy sector.
Education in the metro area is anchored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, a major public research university known for its programs in environmental biology, engineering, and Francophone studies. South Louisiana Community College also plays a vital role in providing higher education and vocational training, contributing to workforce development in the region.
Culturally, the area is steeped in Cajun and Creole heritage, reflected in its music, festivals, and cuisine. The area celebrates its rich history through events like the Festival International de Louisiane and the Acadiana Center for the Arts.
