Economically, the area boasts a diverse economy, with a strong focus on healthcare, education, and manufacturing. Major employers include Lancaster General Health, Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories, and Armstrong World Industries. The area is also known for its significant agricultural sector, particularly in dairy and livestock farming.
Education in the metro area is supported by several higher education institutions. Franklin & Marshall College, located in Lancaster City, is a prestigious liberal arts college known for its academic excellence. Millersville University, in nearby Millersville, offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Elizabethtown College provides liberal arts and professional studies, contributing to the region’s educational and cultural fabric.
Culturally, the area is rich in arts, history, and heritage. The area celebrates its Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch roots, evident in its traditional crafts, food, and annual events like the Lancaster County Quilt & Textile Museum. The Fulton Theatre, one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating theaters, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Music contribute to the area’s vibrant performing arts scene.
Sports in the area include a variety of minor league and amateur teams, with a strong emphasis on community involvement. The Lancaster Barnstormers, a professional baseball team in the Atlantic League, play at Clipper Magazine Stadium and enjoy local support.
Major attractions in the Lancaster PA metro area include the historic Central Market, the nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market, and the Sight & Sound Theatres, known for their elaborate productions based on biblical stories. The region’s natural beauty can be explored in parks like Lancaster County Central Park and along the scenic trails and waterways of the Susquehanna River.
