The Medford metro area, located in Southern Oregon, covers approximately 2,600 square miles and is home to over 220,000 residents. The metro area includes the city of Medford, as well as surrounding communities in Jackson County such as Ashland, Central Point, and Phoenix.
Geographically, the Medford area is characterized by its stunning natural beauty, with the Cascade Range to the east and the Siskiyou Mountains to the west. Rogue Valley, where Medford is situated, is known for its fertile farmland, lush vineyards, and scenic landscapes. The region is also bisected by the Rogue River, a popular destination for fishing, rafting, and kayaking.
The economy of the Medford metro area is diverse, with major industries including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. Providence Medford Medical Center and Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center are the area’s largest employers in the healthcare sector. Manufacturing companies like Erickson Incorporated and Harry & David contribute significantly to the local economy.
Southern Oregon University (SOU) in Ashland and Rogue Community College (RCC) in Grants Pass are the top colleges in the area, offering a wide range of academic programs and vocational training opportunities to students.
Culturally, the Medford area is known for its vibrant arts scene, particularly in the city of Ashland, home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The festival, which runs annually from February to October, attracts theater enthusiasts from around the world with its world-class productions of Shakespearean plays and contemporary works.
In terms of sports, the Medford area is home to the Medford Rogues, a collegiate summer baseball team that competes in the West Coast League. The region also offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, and skiing in the nearby Cascade and Siskiyou Mountains.
Major attractions in the Medford area include the Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery, a popular tourist destination featuring a natural phenomenon where objects appear to defy gravity. The Harry & David Country Village in Medford offers visitors the chance to sample gourmet foods and wines produced in the region.
The city of Ashland is also home to Lithia Park, a 93-acre urban park known for its scenic beauty, hiking trails, and Japanese garden. The park is adjacent to Ashland Creek, which flows through the heart of downtown Ashland and is lined with charming shops, galleries, and cafes.
For history enthusiasts, the Historic Jacksonville Museum offers insight into the area’s pioneer past and Gold Rush history. The Crater Rock Museum in Central Point showcases a collection of geological specimens, fossils, and Native American artifacts found in the region.
