Economically, the area’s economy is predominantly driven by agriculture, with almonds, poultry, and milk as some of the leading products. The area is also experiencing growth in the education and healthcare sectors. Major employers include the University of California, Merced, which has spurred development and innovation in the area, and Mercy Medical Center Merced, providing essential healthcare services to the community.
Education in the metro area is anchored by the University of California, Merced, the newest campus in the University of California system, offering a range of undergraduate and graduate programs with a focus on research and sustainability. Merced College provides additional higher education opportunities, offering academic and vocational programs that cater to the local workforce’s needs.
