Nestled in the picturesque northern region of California, the Redding metro area encompasses approximately 3,500 square miles and is home to a population of around 220,000 residents. Anchored by the city of Redding, this area boasts diverse landscapes, a thriving economy, and a rich cultural heritage.
Geographically, the Redding metro area is situated at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by the majestic Cascade Range to the east and the Coast Range mountains to the west. The area is characterized by its scenic beauty, including the iconic Sacramento River, which flows through the valley, and nearby attractions such as Shasta Lake and Whiskeytown Lake, popular destinations for boating, fishing, and water sports.
The economy of the Redding metro area is diverse, with a strong emphasis on agriculture, healthcare, and tourism. Agriculture plays a significant role in the region, with major crops including almonds, walnuts, and citrus fruits. Redding is also home to several healthcare facilities, including Mercy Medical Center and Shasta Regional Medical Center, which are among the area’s largest employers. Additionally, tourism is a major economic driver, with visitors drawn to the area’s natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities.
In higher education, Simpson University is a prominent institution within the Redding metro area. Known for its strong programs in business, education, and psychology, Simpson University attracts students from across the region and beyond. The university’s campus is located on the north side of Redding and features modern facilities and beautiful grounds.
Redding is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and music venues scattered throughout the city. The historic downtown area is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as the iconic Sundial Bridge, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Sacramento River and designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.
In sports, Redding is home to the Redding Colt 45s, a collegiate wood bat baseball team that competes in the Great West League. The Colt 45s play their home games at Tiger Field, a historic ballpark located in the heart of downtown Redding.
Other major attractions in the Redding metro area include Turtle Bay Exploration Park, a 300-acre park featuring interactive exhibits, botanical gardens, and wildlife exhibits, as well as the nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, home to steaming fumaroles, meadows dotted with wildflowers, and clear mountain lakes.
