The Scranton-Wilkes-Barre PA metro area, situated in northeastern Pennsylvania, is a region with a rich industrial history and a growing present-day economy. The area has also become a hub for distribution and logistics, thanks to its strategic location near major highways and markets in the Northeast.
Education is a significant aspect of the metro area, with institutions such as the University of Scranton, Wilkes University, and King’s College offering a range of academic programs and contributing to the region’s intellectual and cultural life. Luzerne County Community College and Lackawanna College provide valuable vocational training and associate degree programs.
Culturally, the area is known for its rich heritage and vibrant arts scene. The area celebrates its diverse ethnic roots through festivals, cultural events, and culinary offerings. The Scranton Cultural Center, the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, and the Pennsylvania Theatre of Performing Arts in Hazleton host a variety of performances and events, enriching the region’s cultural landscape.
Sports play a role in the metro area’s community life, with minor league teams such as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (baseball) and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (hockey) enjoying local support. College sports, particularly at the area’s universities, also attract a significant following.
Major attractions in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre metro area include the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, which showcases the region’s railroad history, and the Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, a popular destination for gaming and entertainment. The area’s natural beauty is on display at places like the Lackawanna State Park and Ricketts Glen State Park, offering outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing.
