Economically, the metro area has a diversified economy with strong sectors in healthcare, education, and manufacturing. Major employers include CoxHealth and Mercy Hospital Springfield, two of the region’s largest healthcare providers. The area is also home to several manufacturing and distribution companies, contributing to its economic stability and job market.
Education in the metro area is supported by institutions such as Missouri State University and Drury University in Springfield. These universities offer a range of academic programs and are pivotal in workforce development and research. Ozarks Technical Community College also plays a key role in providing vocational training and associate degree programs.
Culturally, the area boasts a rich arts and entertainment scene. The area celebrates its Ozark heritage through various cultural festivals and events. The Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and the Springfield Art Museum are key cultural institutions. The area’s diverse population is reflected in its music scene, festivals, and culinary offerings, showcasing a blend of traditional American and international flavors.
Sports in the Springfield metro area include a variety of collegiate and minor league teams. The Missouri State University Bears, participating in NCAA Division I athletics, have a strong local following. The Springfield Cardinals, a Minor League Baseball team affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals, also enjoy robust local support.
Major attractions in the area include the Fantastic Caverns, a drive-through cave tour, and the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium.
