Staten Island, NY, officially known as Richmond County, is the southernmost borough of New York City and the least populated, with around 491,000 residents. Encompassing an area of about 58 square miles, it is the third-largest borough in terms of land area. Renowned for its suburban character, distinct from the more urbanized parts of the city, Staten Island offers a mix of residential neighborhoods, parklands, and beachfront, providing a quieter pace of life within the bustling context of the greater New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA metropolitan region.
Geographically, Staten Island is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. The borough’s terrain includes a ridge of hills along its spine, expansive green spaces, and a variety of public parks, the largest being the Greenbelt, which is centrally located and contains extensive forests, wetlands, and hiking trails. The coastline offers public beaches, including South Beach and Midland Beach, which are popular during the warmer months.
Staten Island’s economy is predominantly driven by healthcare, retail, and small businesses. Major employers include the Staten Island University Hospital and Richmond University Medical Center, which provide essential healthcare services and are key players in the local job market. The borough also benefits from numerous small businesses and franchises that cater to the community and the tourist population visiting the area’s attractions.
Education plays a vital role in the community, with institutions such as Wagner College and the College of Staten Island, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), offering a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. These institutions contribute not only to the local economy but also to the cultural and intellectual life of the borough. Additionally, St. John’s University has a satellite campus on Staten Island, further enhancing the educational opportunities available.
Culturally, Staten Island has a rich heritage with a strong sense of community identity. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, located in a renovated 19th-century seamen’s retirement complex, is a hub for the arts and culture, providing galleries, theaters, and educational facilities. The Staten Island Museum, which focuses on the history, art, and natural sciences of the borough, is another cultural landmark.
Sports and recreation are well-represented, with numerous parks and recreational facilities. While Staten Island does not host major professional sports teams, it has a vibrant local sports scene, with facilities for baseball, soccer, and golf readily available for public use. The borough also hosts the annual Staten Island Half Marathon, drawing runners from all over the city.
Major attractions include the aforementioned Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the historic Richmond Town – a living history village that offers a glimpse into America’s past—and the Staten Island Zoo, which is especially popular with families. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn, is a notable engineering feat and offers dramatic views of the harbor and the city skyline.
